Making it up (as they go along)

I am fascinated by the way Kiwi's construct their scaffolding. I have noticed that timber scaffolding is often used by the DIYer and here are a few examples of the rickety constructions that people construct.

  1. I noticed when I was living in Wellington NZ, that many nice old villas commonly had ugly metal or wooden brackets permanantly fixed to their outer walls. These are to sling planks across for painting and repairs. Why are these not in any other city that I have noticed. A legacy from an earlier time? Maybe from before the great fire there?
