1:1 Model Making

Final year Product Design projects are currently going through the model making, test rigging and proving stages.

Its imperative that ideas are tested at 1:1 scale early on and then throughout the design project. Students working on small hand held or desk top sized products can often create fast and cheap models whereas larger products can take considerable time to make. In a bid to speed up the large model making process I have introduces a technique I have been using for many years now where chicken wire mesh is used to create both surface materials and components. Chicken wire can be rolled up to make tubes that resemble steel tube or laid flat to simulate sheet materials. The added bonus of chicken wire is that is can be 'sculpted' into organic, zoomorphic shapes quickly and effectively.
